Today I Am A Pirate
03:05
|
|||
Today I Am A Pirate
Today I am a pirate
And I long to sail the seas
Like a seagull over water
Capturing the breeze
Calling me like a long lost friend
If I had a cannon I would fire it
Today I am a pirate
Today I am an angel full of faith and light
Believing there is nothing that love cannot make right
There’s beauty all around me and this world’s a wondrous place
Full of such gravity and grace
There are no enemies or strangers
Today I am an angel
CHORUS:
And I won’t apologize
I will not compromise
I’ll accept the changes as they come around
Sometimes I will get burned
But the lessons I have learned
Will never lose the meaning I have found
Today I am a vessel and all that I contain
Is poured out for the masses like a heavy summer rain
My voice is like the thunder and my music like the wind
Carries me there and back again
Full of the demons that I wrestle
Today I am a vessel
CHORUS:
And I won’t apologize
I will not compromise
I’ll accept the changes as they come around
Sometimes I will get burned
But the lessons I have learned
Will never lose the meaning I have found
Today I am a Vessel
Today I am an Angel
Today I am a Pirate

Whistlestop Cafe

Whistlestop Cafe
Scottsdale to Seattle on a Tuesday afternoon
Sitting in a window seat starin’ at the view
Thinkin’ of you
I know you’ve got your life Lord knows I’ve got mine
Common thoughts and common dreams have been so hard to find
For such a long time
Chorus:
Like two trains at a whistlestop café
Keep the home-fires burning
Go our separate ways
Circling round these circles on our fingers
Until a distant wisp of smoke is all that lingers
At the whistlestop café.
I pull up in the driveway, walk in through the door
Your note is on the table and it cuts me to the core
You sound so sure
You say love’s been escaping like water through a sieve
And keepin’ it together is more than you can give
You just can’t live
Repeat Chorus:
Bridge:
I guess I knew the truth deep inside my heart
We’ve been movin’ so much further apart
Circling round these circles on our fingers
Until a distant wisp of smoke is all that lingers
At the whistlestop café

Run Girl, Run
04:10
|
|||
Run Girl, Run
She caught a westbound bus down on second street
It was the best damn getaway anyone had ever seen
Just like Bonnie and Clyde way back in ‘33
Sometimes you gotta seize the moment of opportunity
And everyone in town was squinting into the sun
Singin’ Run Girl, Run
Run Girl, Run
Daddy went and threw his hat down on the ground
Kicked it up the street like some old dog that he’d found
You could see the moment that he finally gave her up
Picked his hat up off the dirt and then walked back to the truck
Where momma was starin’ west down 71
Prayin’ Run Girl, Run
Run Girl, Run
Chorus:
‘Cause she knows why the caged bird sings
Though it’s been too many years since she tried her wings
She can almost taste the wind
Feel her life begin again, then
Trouble opens up the door and climbs back in
Momma got a postcard in the mail today
Daddy tore it all to pieces and he threw that card away
But not before we saw the picture on the other side
It said “life’s a beach in California” and it filled us with such pride
‘Cause one day we’re gonna do just want she done
Yeah, Run Girl, Run
Run Girl, Run
Chorus:
Cause she knows why the caged bird sings
Though it took a lot of years of tryin’ fore she found her wings
She can finally taste the wind
See the tides rollin’ in
That bird has flown and she ain’t comin’ back again
Sometimes you gotta run girl run

Cowboys In Dallas
05:08
|

Cowboys in Dallas
Well I imagine somewhere in the still of the evenin’
Under skies twice as clear as the prairies are dry
He’s clothed in cracked leather and a ten gallon Stetson
And a pair of six-shooters strapped low on his side
His beard’s filled with dust from the miles that he’s travelled
And his hair smells like smoke from the fire at his feet
And his face is as parched as the leather he’s wearin’
And as tough as the jerky he eats
Chorus:
And I imagine that there are still cowboys in Dallas
Puffin hand-rolled cigarettes
Drinkin’ water from some rain-filled hoof print
I’ve been lookin’ but Lord I ain’t found one yet
And I can’t even watch them ride off in the sunset
Because of that hi-rise next-door
I imagine that there are still cowboys in dallas
But not here on the 21st floor.
I remember it well back in the badlands of my house
The summer of 60 in the heat of July
A five year-old sheriff with my tin badge and toy gun
And a white broomstick stallion with fire in his eyes
I vowed right then and thar that by God I’d grow up to be a cowboy
But manhood dissolves what you dream as a child
I know I can’t be one though I’d still like to see one
And maybe ride by his side for a while
Repeat Chorus:

Leavin' California
03:53
|
|||
Leavin’ California
I’ve got one foot out the door
There ain’t nothin’ for me here
The weather’s good but that ain’t good enough
I’ve got everything I own
In the back of this ole car
And I’m leavin’ California
Those white, sandy beaches
And the mountains off the coast
Paint a different picture for me now
That big ole Texas sky
Well it’s callin’ out my name
And I’m leavin’ California
I’m Leavin’ California
Bridge:
I got fifteen hundred miles
Of white lines in front of me
A dry and barren desert
As far as I can see
What I leave behind
Is just some old and worn out... stuff
And I’m leavin’ California in the dust
I’m gonna turn the rearview mirror
To keep from lookin’ back
Set my watch ahead to Texas time
I’ve been waiting for this day
For so long now
And I’m leavin’ California
I’m leavin’ California
Repeat Bridge:
I’ve got one foot out the door
There ain’t nothin’ for me here
The weather’s good
But that ain’t good enough

Wings
04:28
|

Wings
Josie was a whore who lived
Behind the mercantile
In a 4 by 7 room with cardboard walls
Her hair was dark and silky
Her smile could shame the moon
The color of her eyes I can’t recall
PRE CHORUS
Her momma was a Cherokee
Who brought her into town
When she was not much more than just a girl
She sold her for a bottle
And a single piece of gold
Then left her to the mercies of the world
CHORUS
Even a prisoner can dare to dream
Of something greater…something more
Even a sparrow in a wicker cage
Can open up its wings and long to soar
‘Cos that’s what wings…
That’s what wings are for
Men used to give her money
For an hour in the dark
But Josie was the one who paid the cost
I know she must have thought about
A life beyond those walls
And cried for the innocence she’d lost
One day I heard that Josie
Had up and walked away
Into the night with no good-bye
I couldn’t help believing
That she had found a way
To catch the wind and finally learn to fly
Even a prisoner can dare to dream
Of something greater…something more
Even a sparrow in a wicker cage
Can open up its wings and long to soar
‘Cos that’s what wings…
That’s what wings are for
That’s what wings are for

Two Bit Palomino
03:50
|
|||
Two-Bit Palomino
By the door of the grocery store
It stood there calmly waiting
Just the sight of it sitting there
Set your heart a racing
Dad would lift you up so high
And place your legs astraddle
A supermarket stallion ride
Leather reigns and plastic saddle
CHORUS:
Roy and Trigger, Pat and Dale
Bullet and old Nelly-Belle
Beside you singing “Happy Trails”
On your Two-Bit Palomino
On your Two-Bit Palomino
Mom would slip a quarter in
Off went the palomino
Suddenly you were an Indian
Or a real live Western hero
From The Dakotas to old Mexico
You’d foil the bad guys chances
No telling where a dream could go
As long as that quarter lasted
Chorus
Now storefront palominos graze
In very few locations
Zombie kids play joystick games
With out imagination
Though times they are a changin’
A two-bit palomino still
Can take a kid much further than
A thirty-two-bit Gameboy will

Only Daughter
03:45
|
|||
ONLY DAUGHTER
On the dresser sits a picture from eighteen ninety four
Kind of worn and faded and as old as these pine floors
It frames a man and woman with eyes as dark as mine
And the wheat fields stretched behind them to the sky
I look at that old picture at least twenty times a day
I think about the tons of grain this farm has trucked away
But I am the only daughter from a family built on sons
Sometimes I feel this work is never done
CHORUS:
It’s hard to work the wheat fields when your name is Mary Ann
When the reason you were born was to take a farmer’s hand
But I work the books ‘till midnight, rise when the morning comes
It’s hell to be the only daughter of an only son
They posed for that old picture when a field was just a field
Back before the middleman cut deep into the yield
Now when I shop the local market I just have to hang my head
For my bushel will not buy a loaf of bread
Now I got this land and taxes and a hundred years of pride
I keep the damned accountant Like a Bible by my side
I just work what papa left me and do the best I can
I pray for rain and curse the middle man

Savannah
04:36
|

Savannah
Guess there’s no escaping
The roads you end up taking
All come back to haunt you, in the end
There’s no right or wrong
Some are short and some are long
Some get you back to where you should have been
CHORUS
Oh Savannah, the city’s burning down around you
Oh Savannah, has the Piper finally found you?
Oh Savannah, I hear you calling out my name
And it’s such a crying shame, … Savannah
Like a childhood game
You think that you can claim
Do-overs every time it falls apart
Life wasn’t what you thought
Seems wisdom can’t be bought
At the cost of every lover’s broken heart
Repeat Chorus:
BRIDGE
And high upon this hill
I think about you still
Savannah, I guess I always will
And it’s such a bitter pill
Repeat Chorus:

Sherman's Chimneys
06:16
|
|||
Sherman's Chimneys
A century ago this state was burning, as Sherman cut a trail of murder to the sea.
Now here in this red clay town,
I seem to stand on haunted ground,
With the ghost of treachery.
Every summer of my youth was spent in Georgia, I'd wander through my family's land alone.
Secrets were concealed,
In all those chimneys in the fields,
With their houses gone.
I kept them to myself for fifteen summers, till sixteen came and some girl caught my eye.
The first time makin' love,
Those chimneys rose above us,
And touched a starry sky.
I stumbled to those bricks with my first bottle, the year that men went walking on the moon.
I poured whiskey in my mouth,
In a torn and troubled South,
Hummin' Hendrix tunes.
Chorus
I could leave here on the wings of angels,
Or I could jump an outbound train,
But I cannot leave this land of Sherman's chimneys
And not look back again.
Now there's 30 years more weather on those chimneys, and 30 years more livin' on my face.
Red clay upon my tires,
Parked by rusty old barbed wire,
That guards the familys' place.
I set out across the field to see some old friends, they're not as tall as I remembered them to be.
My youth was then replayed,
As I sat there in the shade,
Of Sherman's legacy.
I told them I had seen their countless cousins, in pastures large and small throughout this land.
And no matter what their thoughts,
Hell, they weren't all Sherman's fault,
Hope they understand.
There has to be at least a thousand stories, for every chimney bare that sits without a home.
But as long as there's a world,
Where a boys heart can unfurl,
They'll never stand alone.
Chorus

Boots And Dust And Dirt
02:57
|
|||
Boots and Dust and Dirt
Sitting in the hot-seat
Feeling my heart beat
Knowing that gate is gonna open
I can make the bell
Watching his ears twitch
Hearing his tail switch
Knowing that it’s his plan
To lose this man
I hope I live to tell
CHORUS:
Then there’s a horse explosion
A rodeo commotion
And I ain't letting go
It's boots and dust and dirt
Boots and dust and dirt...
Boots and dust and dirt...here I go
Like a rocket below me
Trying hard to throw me
Knowing it's on his mind
To leave me behind
Somewhere on the ground
With a buck and a kick
Yeah things are moving quick
Knowing I'm almost there
But he don't care
As he spins around
Then there’s a horse explosion
A rodeo commotion
And I ain't letting go
It's boots and dust and dirt
Boots and dust and dirt...
Boots and dust and dirt...here I go
Bridge
There ain’t no time to think
In the middle of a rodeo
You're sitting on a ton of dynomite
And buddy it’s about to blow...
Yeah there’s a horse explosion
A rodeo commotion
And I ain't letting go
It's boots and dust and dirt
Boots and dust and dirt...
Boots and dust and dirt...here I go
Boots and dust and dirt
Boots and dust and dirt
Boots and dust and dirt...here I go

When The Feeling's Gone
03:46
|
|||
When The Feeling's Gone
Late at night driving Home
Heaviest heart you've ever known
Sometimes the burden alone is the proof
You can't pretend, you can't return
Love ain't something you just relearn
There's no emotional fountain of youth
CHORUS:
When the feeling's gone, its gone
Says so in every sad love song
When love ain't right its wrong
Even it it means you gotta move on
When the feeling's gone
So you try to have faith and a little hope
Tie another knot in that old rope
Just to keep from falling apart
And you build that wall, build that fence
Pretty soon it makes no sense
You try to contain your yearning heart
CHORUS:
When the feeling's gone, its gone
Says so in every sad love song
When love ain't right its wrong
Even it it means you gotta move on
When the feeling's gone
BRIDGE:
How do you ever know
When you've reached the point of no return
Should you keep feeding the fire
Or walk away and let it burn
CHORUS:
When the feeling's gone, its gone
Says so in every sad love song
When love ain't right its wrong
Even it it means you gotta move on
When the feeling's gone, its gone
Says so in every sad love song
When love ain't right its wrong
Even it it means you gotta move on
When the feeling's gone
When the feeling's gone
When the feeling's gone
Yeah, its gone, its gone, its gone....

The Buffalo Grass
05:45
|
|||
The Buffalo Grass
Its been forty-five days since the snows have begun
I stare at the fire and long for the sun
As the bitter winds blow through the mouth of the pass
I sit here and dream of the Buffalo grass
The ponies are shaggy; their coats have grown long
With heads down, they huddle together as one
At the window, my breath forms a mist on the glass
As I patiently wait for the Buffalo grass
CHORUS:
The Seasons still turn
The prairies still yearn
The Sioux have all gone
The Bison moved on
And soon I will follow them home
Mollie passed in September and left me alone
Now my heart is as heavy and round as a stone
Too many years have gone by too fast
And I long for the feel of the Buffalo grass
The animals sleep while the world holds it’s breath
The woods are as still and as silent as death
When the mountain streams flow, spring will follow at last
And the wind will blow free through the Buffalo grass
REPEAT CHORUS
The geese will return; a symbol of change
The elk will be foraging out on the range
Once again nature’s palette will color the pass
And I will find peace in the Buffalo grass
Yes, I will find peace in the Buffalo …grass
