A century ago this state was burning, as Sherman cut a trail of murder to the sea.
Now here in this red clay town,
I seem to stand on haunted ground,
With the ghost of treachery.
Every summer of my youth was spent in Georgia, I'd wander through my family's land alone.
Secrets were concealed,
In all those chimneys in the fields,
With their houses gone.
I kept them to myself for fifteen summers, till sixteen came and some girl caught my eye.
The first time makin' love,
Those chimneys rose above us,
And touched a starry sky.
I stumbled to those bricks with my first bottle, the year that men went walking on the moon.
I poured whiskey in my mouth,
In a torn and troubled South,
Hummin' Hendrix tunes.
Chorus
I could leave here on the wings of angels,
Or I could jump an outbound train,
But I cannot leave this land of Sherman's chimneys
And not look back again.
Now there's 30 years more weather on those chimneys, and 30 years more livin' on my face.
Red clay upon my tires,
Parked by rusty old barbed wire,
That guards the familys' place.
I set out across the field to see some old friends, they're not as tall as I remembered them to be.
My youth was then replayed,
As I sat there in the shade,
Of Sherman's legacy.
I told them I had seen their countless cousins, in pastures large and small throughout this land.
And no matter what their thoughts,
Hell, they weren't all Sherman's fault,
Hope they understand.
There has to be at least a thousand stories, for every chimney bare that sits without a home.
But as long as there's a world,
Where a boys heart can unfurl,
They'll never stand alone.
